Unit 7 - Glossary

  1. Emphasis/Contrast (focal point) – the most emphasized element
  2. Proximity/Grouping – creates a bond between page elements and is how close together objects are placed together
  3. Balance – places elements on the page so that text and graphic elements are evenly distributed
  4. Alignment – refers to lining up the top, bottom, sides, or middle of text or graphic elements on a page
  5. Harmony/Proportion – all parts of the visual image relate to and complement each other
  6. White Space – empty spaces in a design
  7. Repetition – repeating a sequence or having it occur more than a few times
  8. Color – meanings of different colors varies by culture; the following affect meaning when used (Hue, Saturation, Value, Actual Color)
  9. Brightness – relative expression of the intensity of the energy output of a visible light source
  10. Contrast – distinguishing by comparing/creating differences
  11. Rbg and cmyk differences – the difference for the way a picture is seen on screen versus what is shown when printed
  12. Color management – term used to describe an integrated system of computer hardware, software, and workflow techniques all working together to translate color from one device to another in a controlled way
  13. Serifs – the line attached to the end of a stroke in a letter or symbol
  14. Kerning – targeted adjustment between specific letter pairs to adjust anomalies in spacing created by the shapes of the two letters that make letters look too far apart or too close
  15. Tracking or letter spacing – Normal adjustment between all characters in a range of text
  16. Leading – space that exists between type lines
  17. Baseline shift – feature that shifts a character up or down relative to the baseline
  18. Type size – the height of the character typed
  19. Readability – arranging words and groups of words in a way that allows the readers eye to access the content easily and in a way that makes sense
  20. Hierarchy – organization and prioritization of content as a means to communicate a message
  21. Fonts – collection of all the characters of a typeface in one size and one style
  22. Rule of thirds (optical center) – dividing a picture into three sections vertically and horizontally and lines and points of intersection represent places to position important visual elements
  23. Nameplate – banner on the front of a newsletter or periodical that identifies the publication
  24. Table of contents – List of the parts of a book or document organized in the order in which each piece appears
  25. Masthead – a graphic image or text title at the top of a web page that identifies the web site and sometimes the particular section of the site
  26. Titles and headers – words that let reader know the name of a section
  27. Page numbers – the number on the page to let reader know the page the reader is viewing and possibly the number out of a total of pages
  28. Bylines – the name of the author of a writing
  29. Continuation lines – sometimes called jump lines but these lines help the reader know the page to “jump” to finish reading or viewing information
  30. Pull quotes – small selection of text that is pulled out and quoted in a larger typeface
  31. End signs – sometimes called an endmark and is the graphic at the end of a writing to let the reader know the end of the piece has been reached
  32. Photos/illustrations – a picture or graphic used in a writing
